In 2019, Matt made his debut as a writer/director with the short documentary BELONGING supported by Screen Australia and Channel Ten’s Out Here Initiative. BELONGING is a documentary from Toyshop Entertainment that follows 18-year-old LGBTQI+ activist Sam Watson as he takes a road trip from Hobart to north-west Tasmania to examine the impact and influence of gay rights activist Rodney Croome’s public fight for gay law reform, which began in the 1980s and continues today. Watson explores what life is like for young LGBTQI+ people in regional Tasmania in 2019.
BELONGING had its world premiere at the 2020 Queer Film Festival at the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras and went on to win Best Documentary Short at the 2020 Melbourne Queer Film Festival. BELONGING is currently streaming via this link
In 2018, Matt Scholten was one of the recipients of Screen Queensland’s Talent Development Fund.
In 2017 Matt was acting coach for Magpie Pictures’ GRACE BESIDE ME.
In 2014, Matt completed a Director’s Attachment with Channel Seven Productions on drama series A PLACE TO CALL HOME.
Matt is currently writing and developing several new screen projects.
